2025 has certainly had its ups and downs. The South African economy experienced a modest but consistent recovery, improved energy stability and the new government coalition boosted investor confidence.
In the economic sector, mining and manufacturing rebounded, driven by strong performance in platinum, gold and the automotive sector. Not to be outdone, the financial services sector continued to be a positive contributor to growth. Capitec Bank and Discovery Bank continue to evolve the market with innovative product offerings, capturing market share from historically large banks.
Inflation A Major Focus
Inflation has also been a major focus, with the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) aiming to anchor it to a 3% target. The National government’s gross loan debt increased to over R5.8 Trillion, reaching 78.1% of GDP, with debt-servicing costs absorbing a significant portion of revenue. This cost is projected to rise to around R440 billion by 2026/27.
The Government Of National Unity
The formation of the Government of National Unity after the May 2024 elections led to renewed business and investor confidence. Significant improvements in electricity reliability, with less loadshedding due to private sector participation and better management of ESKOM, were noted. Sadly, bottlenecks in rail and port logistics remain a drag on exports.
Overall,2025 was a year of fragile recovery and cautious optimism.
